Professional Premium Email solutions are costly. Nowadays, many tend to use low cost Webmail solutions. The biggest downside in Webmail is that you always need to log in to the browser. Is there a way to access your Webmail emails on your desktop? Yes. We can configure Webmail to access via various desktop applications and even through Mobiles. In this post, let’s explore how to get access Webmail on your computer.
What you need to setup webmail on the computer
There are a few prerequisites.
- You need a desktop email client application
- You need Webmail server credentials, incoming / outgoing mail server details, mail authentication details, etc.
What is the best email client?
The Microsoft Outlook is one of the best email clients in the market. Unfortunately, now Outlook is subscription based. The good news is Microsoft provides a free email client called Microsoft Live Mail bundled free with Windows.
Thunderbird is on the other end, is a popular free and Open source email client across multiple platforms. It is a simple, secure and highly customizable. You may follow the same manual setup steps to configure Thunderbird application.
I mentioned only two email clients and you may think it’s not fair to have a title as the best email client. Anyway, it’s very broad topic and my intension here is to quickly explore an easy to setup email client for Webmail.
Requirements to setup email client for Webmail
If you don’t see an auto-configuration script under Webmail control panel for your client, you can still configure using manual settings. A general example for configuration details would be as follows. There are two ways to setup; either using a secure SSL/TLS connection or using a Non SSL setting (not recommended).
Secure SSL/TLS Settings (Recommended)
This is only an example and you need to refer to the Webmail control panel or the hosting provider for actual details.
Non-SSL Settings (NOT Recommended)
Again, this is only an example and you need to refer to the Webmail control panel or the hosting provider for actual details.
Mail Client Automatic Configuration Scripts for Webmail
When you access an email account through a desktop email application such as “iOS for iPhone/iPad/iPod and MacOS® Mail.app®”, the email application will require specific information about your email account. You can use the auto-configure options to attempt to automatically configure your email application.
Almost all Webmail solutions provide an automatic configuration script to setup email clients faster and automatically without a much hasle. You can check this in your Control panel or request your hosting provider.
If the available options are not compatible with your application, you will need to use the Manual Settings information (Refer to Secure SSL / Non SSL Settings).
